The Atacama Desert extends over most of the Far North of Chile.North of Iquique there are few good beaches along the coast.Inland, the "pampa" is arid and filled by salt flats.
In the Altiplano area rise volcanic peaks, the highest of which includes Parinacota (6.350), Guayatiri (6.046), Acotango (6.050) and others around 5.000-6.000 meters above sea level!!!
One of the famous places to visit is San Pedro de Atacama,an oasis town of narrow streets and adobe houses. Located 2.400 meters between the Atacama desert and the High Altiplano, this region landscapes include volcanoes,salt flats, cactus,moon-like valleys,geysers and remote villages.
It is also rich in archeological history ranging from pethroglyps to millenarian mummies .
